The recommended gearing for the Rustler with 3s lipo is 31/76. The motor was swapped out by traxxas due to high temps running stock tires and gearing, so I do not suspect a bad motor. The slash vxl is 2wd instead of being 4x4, 4x4 vxl is the 2wd with a different chassis and is 4wd, and the 4x4 ultimate is the 4x4 vxl except with loads of upgrades, and it's definitely worth it for the price (comes with I think $400 in upgrades over the standard vxl slash).

I’ve fried two of them on 4wd Traxxas rigs. I moved to the Reedy 3300 motors (cause the breakers sell these for cheap) and I could then gear up and they run cool as a cucumber on 3s.
